Kostel svatého Josefa

Janowice, Czechia

About this place

St. Joseph's Church is a Neo-Gothic church in Janovice, a long village stretched along the foothills of the Beskids in the Frýdek-Místek district, Moravian-Silesian Region, Czech Republic. The single-nave building, topped by a roughly fifty-meter front tower, rises above the village and can be seen from a considerable distance.

Why did Janovice get its own church so late?

Despite having a sizeable population, Janovice went without its own church for a long time. Local believers had to travel to attend services in the neighboring parishes of Malenovice, Frýdlant, or as far as Frýdek. The situation began to change after 1873, when Father Josef Loriš of Frýdek started collecting funds for a church to be built in the village itself. His fundraising effort eventually gathered enough resources to launch construction, sparing Janovice residents the long walk to Sunday Mass elsewhere.

When was the church built and consecrated?

Construction took four years, from 1887 to 1891. The church was consecrated on 21 June 1891 by episcopal commissioner Karel Findinsky. A year later, in 1892, an independent parish was established in Janovice, formally ending the village's dependence on churches in surrounding communities.

What does the church's architecture look like?

The building follows the Neo-Gothic style commonly used for new rural churches across Cieszyn Silesia and the Beskid region in the second half of the 19th century. Its single-nave form is dominated by a tall front tower reaching around fifty meters, a landmark visible from many points along the elongated village.

What happened to the church more recently?

In 2001, the building was placed on the list of Czech cultural monuments. That same year, the church's small tower had to be removed for safety reasons. Its reconstruction was completed in January 2002, restoring the building's original appearance.

Where exactly is the church located?

The church stands in Janovice, a village in the Frýdek-Místek district of the Moravian-Silesian Region, in the northeastern part of the Czech Republic, within the Beskid foothills. Its approximate geographic coordinates are 49.621124, 18.407437.
