About this place
The Evangelical Church in Frýdek-Místek stands in the heart of this Czech town in the Moravian-Silesian Region and today serves two separate Protestant congregations under one roof. Built in the early twentieth century, it ranks among the most significant Protestant landmarks in the Cieszyn Silesia area and remains an active place of worship.
How did the church come to be built?
The foundation stone was laid on 8 May 1910, the result of years of joint effort by Polish, Czech and German Evangelicals from Frýdek, Místek and the surrounding villages, who had already been holding services and running a preaching station in the town since the late nineteenth century. Construction was carried out by the building firm of Hans Pohl, a master builder based in Frýdek. The church was solemnly consecrated in 1911, and an independent congregation was formally established around it in 1919.
What architectural style does the building follow?
The church was designed in a historicist style with neo-Gothic elements, most visible in its pointed-arch windows and cross-vaulted interior. The structure is built of brick, and a clock tower rises above the entrance, visible from many points in the town centre. The entrance porch is supported by columns of artificial marble, while the chancel ends in a polygonal apse. Officially the building carries the name Church of Jesus (Czech: Ježíšův kostel), though it is sometimes mistakenly referred to as the Church of Saints Peter and Paul. In recognition of its historical and architectural value, it was entered on the Czech list of cultural monuments by decision of the Ministry of Culture on 9 November 1995.
Who uses the church today?
After the Second World War, the German Evangelical congregation in Frýdek-Místek was dissolved by state authorities, and the church, together with its rectory, passed to the congregation of the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren. Today the building is shared by two communities: the congregation of the Silesian Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession and the congregation of the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren in Frýdek-Místek. Both parishes hold their own services and events in the same building — a practical arrangement that is less common among Protestant communities in the region.
Where exactly is the church located?
The building stands at Husova 377 in Frýdek-Místek, right in the town centre, within easy walking distance of the main square and other historic sights. Frýdek-Místek lies in the Moravian-Silesian Region at the foot of the Moravian-Silesian Beskids, making the church a convenient stop when exploring the wider area.
