About this place
Kokrháč is a protected natural monument in the Ore Mountains (Krušné hory), situated within the cadastral territory of Prunéřov, part of the town of Kadaň, roughly 12 kilometers from Chomutov. The protected area covers 9.24 hectares and stretches across elevations of 450 to 640 meters, within the valley of the Prunéřovský stream.
What makes Kokrháč geologically special?
The main reason this site is protected is its remarkable example of selective rock weathering. The bedrock here consists of fine- to medium-grained muscovite to two-mica orthogneiss transitioning into migmatite, dating back to the upper Proterozoic and lower Paleozoic eras. The orthogneiss found at Kokrháč has a distinctive reddish hue and belongs to the so-called red gneiss group of the Ore Mountains crystalline complex. Centuries of weathering have shaped a striking rock formation whose silhouette resembles a rooster's comb — which is in fact where the name "Kokrháč" comes from, derived from the Czech word for a rooster's crow.
What plant life grows here?
The reserve is home to the endangered lady's slipper orchid (Cypripedium calceolus). Alongside it grow relict pine stands mixed with oak, beech, and spruce. This combination of relict vegetation clinging to a rocky substrate makes the site particularly valuable for nature conservation in the Ore Mountains region.
How large is the protected area and what surrounds it?
Kokrháč forms part of a much larger Natura 2000 site of European significance called Kokrháč – Hasištejn, covering a total of 168 hectares. The whole territory lies within the Prunéřov Stream Valley Nature Park. The bed of the Prunéřovský stream marks the northern and northwestern boundary of the reserve, and its waters eventually flow into a reservoir on the Ohře River near Kadaň.
What else is worth seeing nearby?
Right next to the reserve stand the ruins of Hasištejn Castle, which together with the surrounding valley make this a popular hiking destination in the Ore Mountains. The mountain views and the sculpted rock formations draw visitors looking to experience the unspoiled nature of this part of the Czech Republic.
