About this place
Kejtovské louky is a natural monument (přírodní památka) located in the Vysočina Region, east of the village of Obrataň in the Pelhřimov district. Part of the protected area falls within the cadastral territory of Věžná, roughly 1.5 km northwest of the village centre. The site is administered and supervised by the Vysočina Regional Authority.
What is protected at Kejtovské louky?
At the heart of the site are peat meadows stretching along a meandering stream. This combination — waterlogged, peaty meadowland cut through by a slow-flowing, strongly winding watercourse — has become increasingly rare across the Czech landscape, which is why the area was granted formal legal protection. The constant moisture and particular chemical composition of the peat soils support plant communities typical of boggy, wet-meadow habitats, quite different from the drier meadows found in most managed agricultural land.
Why was the site protected?
The main reason behind the natural-monument designation is the presence of rare and protected plant and animal species tied to peatland habitats. Among the plants recorded here are bogbean (a species characteristic of wet, peaty ground), early marsh-orchids and related orchid species, along with several sedge species that together form the distinctive plant cover of this meadow type. Their presence indicates the habitat is well preserved and holds notable ecological value at a regional level.
The animal life includes water frogs, for which the wet meadows and meandering stream provide natural breeding and feeding grounds, as well as the kingfisher — a bird strongly associated with clean watercourses, feeding on small fish and aquatic invertebrates. The presence of kingfishers is itself an indicator of good water quality in the stream running through the reserve.
Landscape and character of the area
Kejtovské louky sits within the gently rolling, mixed agricultural-and-forest landscape typical of the Vysočina Region, where small stream valleys act as natural ecological corridors linking larger forest complexes. The meandering nature of the watercourse means the channel repeatedly changes direction over a short stretch, slowing the flow of water and encouraging the formation of waterlogged, peaty depressions along its banks — these depressions form the core of the protected habitat.
Frequently asked questions
Where exactly is Kejtovské louky located? The site lies east of Obrataň, in the Pelhřimov district of the Vysočina Region. Part of the reserve falls within the cadastral area of Věžná, about 1.5 km northwest of the village centre.
What type of protected area is it? It is a přírodní památka (natural monument) — one of the categories used in the Czech Republic to protect smaller sites of significant natural value.
What can visitors expect to see here? Peat meadows crossed by a meandering stream, rare plant species (bogbean, marsh-orchids, sedges), and wildlife adapted to wet habitats, including the kingfisher.
Can the site be visited? Because it protects sensitive peatland habitats, visits should stay to marked paths or observation from the edges of the site so as not to disturb the natural processes taking place there.
Who manages the site? Kejtovské louky is overseen by the Vysočina Regional Authority (krajský úřad).
