Kasteel van Zwijnaarde

Gandawa, Belgium

About this place

Kasteel van Zwijnaarde is a castle located in Zwijnaarde, a district of Ghent, Belgium, with a history stretching back to the mid-14th century. While the building standing today reflects a neo-rococo style from the 1920s, the story behind it spans centuries of ownership changes, destruction and rebuilding worth knowing before a visit.

How far back does its history go?

The estate was first recorded in 1345, when a certain Wouter van Zwijnaarde transferred it to the Abbey of Saint Peter in Ghent. From that point until 1796, the property remained in the hands of the abbey's abbots, who styled themselves "lords of Zwijnaarde" and used the residence as a retreat outside the city walls — effectively a country residence for Ghent's clergy.

Which notable figures stayed here?

The castle was more than a monastic holding. From 1420 onward it served as a stopping point for the Counts of Flanders before their ceremonial "joyous entry" into Ghent, underlining the site's role in the region's political ceremony. Among its recorded guests was Isabella of Austria (Isabella of Habsburg), who stayed at the castle and died there in 1526 — a detail that ties Zwijnaarde into the broader history of the Habsburg dynasty in the Low Countries.

What survived, and what was lost?

The original medieval moated stronghold did not survive in its early form. It was destroyed during the period of Calvinist rule in Ghent, between 1577 and 1584 — a turbulent religious and political era that damaged many ecclesiastical buildings across the region. Reconstruction came in the 17th century under Abbot Joachim Schaeyck, whose name is linked to a later designation of the estate as "della Faille" following subsequent changes of ownership.

The destruction did not end there: the castle was rebuilt again around 1836 in neoclassical style, only to be destroyed once more during the First World War, in 1918. It was reconstructed a final time in 1922, this time in neo-rococo style, and that is the version of the castle still standing today.

Where exactly is the castle located?

Kasteel van Zwijnaarde sits on Joachim Schayckstraat, in the heart of Zwijnaarde, an area administratively part of Ghent. Its coordinates are approximately 51.0005 N, 3.7213 E, placing it just south of the city center in a quiet, green setting.

Frequently asked questions

Can visitors go inside the castle? The building today serves representative functions rather than operating as a standard tourist attraction with regular opening hours — it's worth checking its current status before planning a visit.

Why is the castle sometimes called "della Faille"? This name refers to one of the families that held the estate in later centuries, after the period of management by the abbots of the Abbey of Saint Peter.

What remains from the original medieval structure? Very little — repeated destruction, in the 16th century and again during the First World War, means the current building is the result of the 1922 reconstruction in neo-rococo style rather than the original medieval stronghold.

What was the castle's significance in Flemish history? As a stopping place for the Counts of Flanders before entering Ghent, and as the site of Isabella of Habsburg's death, the castle played a real role in the region's ceremonial and dynastic history.
