About this place
Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes in Dyjákovice
The Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes is a Neo-Gothic chapel standing on the eastern edge of the village of Dyjákovice, in the Znojmo district of South Moravia, Czech Republic. Locally it is also known as "Mariánský kostelík" (the Little Marian Church), and it is listed as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.
When was the chapel built and to whom is it dedicated?
The chapel was built in 1886 as a family chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes. It dates from a period when Neo-Gothic design was a common choice for small rural chapels across Central Europe — a style that echoed medieval church architecture while staying modest enough for a single village community to build and maintain.
What does the chapel's architecture look like?
The building is a masonry, single-nave, longitudinal structure closed at the eastern end by a polygonal, five-sided presbytery. A tower rises above the western entrance, positioned on the central axis of the facade. The walls are pierced by pointed Gothic windows fitted with metal frames, while buttresses reinforce the corners and the spaces between the windows. Decorative rosettes sit above the windows, the roof is covered in sheet metal, and the stone plinth is finished with a molded cornice. The overall look is the restrained brick palette typical of rural chapels from this era.
What can visitors see inside?
Inside, the nave is covered by cross-rib vaulting with flat ribs, divided into two vault bays whose bosses are carved with eight-petaled flowers. The five-sided presbytery has its own vault, springing from flat brackets. Above the western entrance sits a gallery, reached by a spiral stone staircase — the same staircase also gives access to the bell chamber and the attic. The east wall holds an altar niche carved to resemble a grotto, housing a statue of Our Lady of Lourdes, complemented by a carved Neo-Gothic altar retable.
What role does the chapel play today?
Although it remains formally a family chapel, it is now used for pilgrimage Masses and harvest-festival Masses, and occasionally hosts weddings, baptisms, and other family celebrations. Its status as a Czech cultural monument means the building is legally protected and registered in the national heritage catalogue under number 1000161737.
How do you get to the chapel in Dyjákovice?
Dyjákovice lies in South Moravia's Znojmo district, close to the border with Austria. The chapel stands at the eastern end of the village, making it an easy stop when exploring the area around Znojmo or passing through this border region. Given the village's small size, there is little dedicated tourist infrastructure, so the chapel is best treated as a brief stop rather than a full day's destination.
