About this place
Kaňon Labe (Elbe Canyon) is the most powerful sandstone canyon in Europe, carved by the Elbe River (Labe) into Cretaceous sandstone deposits between the towns of Děčín and Hřensko, in the area around municipalities such as Ludvíkovice, Labská Stráň and Arnoltice. Its vertical rock walls and towers plunge more than 300 metres in places, forming a landscape of international significance.
Where is the canyon located?
Kaňon Labe lies in the Ústí nad Labem Region, within the Děčín district, stretching along the Elbe River all the way to the German border. The area forms part of the Labské pískovce Protected Landscape Area, and its most valuable section, covering the slopes of the river's right bank, has been additionally protected since 2008 as the Kaňon Labe National Nature Reserve, spanning 480 hectares.
What makes this canyon so distinctive?
The canyon was shaped by the Elbe's erosive power, which over thousands of years cut deep into the soft sandstone rock laid down during the Cretaceous period. The result is a rare combination of river and sandstone landforms found nowhere else in Europe on this scale — earning it the reputation of the continent's most powerful sandstone canyon. Its sheer, vertical rock faces and distinctive rock-tower formations give the landscape an almost mountainous character, even though the valley itself does not sit at great elevation.
What wildlife lives in the canyon?
Kaňon Labe provides habitat for numerous endangered, protected and rare species. Gravel and sandy deposits along the riverbanks support the last known Czech population of a critically endangered riverside plant species. After decades of absence, the European beaver — itself once critically endangered — has also returned to the banks of the Elbe within the canyon, gradually re-establishing its presence in the area.
How can visitors explore the canyon?
Marked hiking trails run through the canyon, including routes signed in green and yellow, following the opposite bank of the Elbe and passing numerous rocky viewpoints along the way. From Hřensko, a ferry crosses the river, offering a quick and convenient way to reach the German side at Schöna. This makes it possible to explore the canyon from both banks, taking in its rock walls and towers from different vantage points.
