Kaluža

Hradec nad Moravicí, Czechia

About this place

Kaluža is a national nature reserve on the right-bank slopes of the deeply incised Moravice River valley, in the southern part of the municipal territory of Hradec nad Moravicí, in the Opava district of the Czech Republic. It lies roughly 4 km southwest of Hradec nad Moravicí itself and about 3 km north of the village of Lesní Albrechtice, a local part of the municipality of Březová.

When was the reserve established?

The area was declared a protected reserve in 1969. It covers 57 hectares stretching along the right bank of the Moravice River. The purpose of protection is to preserve a unique, natural, mixed forest stand that has survived here in near-pristine condition.

What grows in the reserve?

The core of the forest is a well-preserved natural beech stand mixed with spruce and a rich understorey. Typical plants found in the ground layer include false anemone (Isopyrum thalictroides), white butterbur (Petasites albus), alternate-leaved golden saxifrage (Chrysosplenium alternifolium), coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara), common butterbur (Petasites hybridus), and wood anemone (Anemonoides nemorosa). The forest shows a considerable diversity of stand types, though rich beechwoods dominate by area.

What animals live here?

A notable species inhabiting the reserve is the fire salamander (Salamandra salamandra), which successfully reproduces in the mixed, beech-dominated forest at the spring-fed sites.

Who manages the reserve?

The area is administered by the Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic (AOPK ČR), specifically its Poodří Protected Landscape Area Administration.

Are there hiking trails through the reserve?

No marked tourist trails or educational paths cross the reserve itself. Field excursions are still possible along the western border of the area, where a stabilized valley road — used for forestry and hunting management — runs. This road offers the easiest way to glimpse the steep, forested slopes deep in the Moravice valley.
