Kalspot

Kamenné Žehrovice, Czechia

About this place

Kalspot is a small but ecologically significant nature reserve on the southeastern edge of the village of Kamenné Žehrovice, in the Kladno district of the Czech Republic. Protected since 1986, the reserve covers just 3.58 hectares, yet it packs in one of the region's most interesting wetland microcosms. Kalspot sits on the left bank of the Loděnice stream (also known as Kačák) and forms part of the Kačák River Basin Nature Park.

What is Kalspot?

The reserve is a floodplain wetland meadow, periodically covered by water. Its appearance shifts dramatically with the seasons: when water levels stay high and stable, typical wetland plants take hold, while as the water recedes, buttercups and water dropwort come to dominate. Between the shallow pools stretch bands of reed beds and sedge vegetation, forming a mosaic of habitats typical of inland Central European wetlands.

Why does this place need protection?

The main reason Kalspot was placed under protection is its wetland plant communities and the rich amphibian population they support. The reserve is home to several species of frogs, toads, and newts, for which the waterlogged meadows and small pools provide essential breeding grounds. Because wetlands naturally tend to overgrow and dry out over time, targeted conservation work was carried out here in 2001, when three pools were deepened. This intervention clearly improved conditions for amphibians and contributed to a renewed increase in the numbers of the monitored species.

How can you visit Kalspot?

A red-marked tourist trail runs around the reserve, and the Drvotova educational trail follows its edge, allowing visitors to learn about the area's natural value without disturbing the ecologically sensitive core of the reserve. It's a good option for anyone looking for a quiet walk that combines a bit of nature education with the chance to observe wetland flora and fauna typical of the Czech countryside.

What should you know before visiting?

Kalspot lies close to the center of Kamenné Žehrovice, making it an easily accessible stop on a short trip through the surrounding area. As a protected area, the reserve calls for respecting nature conservation rules — the best way to appreciate it is from the educational trail, without stepping directly into the wetland itself.
