Jarník observation tower

Písek, Czechia

About this place

Jarník Observation Tower is a steel lookout tower standing on top of Jarník hill (606 m above sea level), about 2 km east of the center of Písek in South Bohemia, Czech Republic. The structure serves a double purpose — it's a viewing platform for visitors and, at the same time, a working mobile phone and radio transmitter mast.

How to get there?

Jarník hill sits right next to Písek, so the tower is easy to reach by car, on foot, or by bike along the trails leading out of town. The trip from the city center takes just a few minutes by car, and the walking route to the summit is one of the popular recreational trails for both locals and visitors exploring the South Bohemian region. Admission is free, and the tower is open year-round whenever weather conditions allow.

What will you see?

The current tower was built in 1997, a joint project of mobile operator Eurotel, local Radio Prácheň, and the town of Písek — combining a tourist attraction with telecommunications infrastructure. The full steel structure reaches 59.4 meters, but visitors only climb as far as the observation platform, set at a height of 34.6 meters. Getting there means climbing 182 steps.

One of the tower's distinctive features is its double spiral staircase — one flight is dedicated entirely to going up, the other entirely to coming down, so visitors never have to squeeze past each other on the narrow steps.

From the platform, a wide panorama opens up over Písek, spread out below the hill, and on clear days the view extends much further: the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands, the Brdy mountains, Blanský Forest, and the peaks of the Šumava range on the horizon. That makes Jarník one of the better vantage points in the region for taking in both the town itself and the surrounding hills and forests.

History of the site

Jarník hill had a lookout tower long before the current one. Between 1904 and 1918 a wooden observation tower stood here, built by the Klub českých turistů (Club of Czech Tourists), the organization behind much of the region's early hiking infrastructure at the turn of the 20th century. After that tower disappeared, the hill went without one for most of the 20th century, until the present steel structure was raised in the late 1990s.

When to visit?

Because the tower stands on an exposed hilltop, the clearest views come on cloudless days, especially in spring and autumn, when the air tends to be crisper and distant mountain ranges are easier to make out than in summer haze. The tower is open all year, but it's worth checking the weather forecast before heading out — strong wind or fog can significantly limit visibility from the platform.
