About this place
Jalovec is a small nature reserve in the Vysočina region, right next to the village of Číchov in the Třebíč district, sitting at an elevation of 490 to 570 metres above sea level. Covering just over 5 hectares, the site was granted protected status in 1990 and has since become one of the more interesting botanical stops in this part of the region.
Why is this place protected?
The reserve was established to safeguard stands of common juniper along with remnants of natural submontane grasslands that have survived here despite the proximity of recreational facilities. These grasslands are the main reason Jalovec was placed under protection: several rare and endangered plant species grow in its turf, including the Bohemian gentian, which reaches the absolute eastern edge of its range at this very site. Alongside it grow other dry-grassland and submontane specialists adapted to poor, sun-exposed soils.
What does the landscape look like?
A mosaic landscape is typical for the reserve — open, sun-drenched grasslands alternate with juniper thickets that gave the site its name. This structure helps sustain species that need plenty of light and warmth, while also creating a distinctive, scenic view that stands out clearly from the surrounding forests.
How can you get there?
The reserve can be reached by car directly from Číchov, and a blue-marked hiking trail also runs through it, making it an easily accessible stop on a walking route through the area. A recreational centre sits right next to the reserve, complete with a small ski lift — in winter the area sees fairly heavy use by skiers, while in summer a restaurant nearby serves visitors and locals alike.
Who manages the area?
The reserve is administered by the Regional Authority of the Vysočina Region, which is responsible for monitoring habitat conditions and protecting the species found here from excessive pressure linked to the nearby recreational infrastructure.
