Hvížďalka

Hvížďalka is a small late-Gothic fortified manor (tvrz) in the village of Kalenice near Horažďovice, in the Plzeň Region. The building now stands in a manor park, still partly ringed by a moat and earthen rampart, about 75 metres from the village chapel.

How old is Kalenice, and who lived here?

The earliest written record of Kalenice appears in a donation charter of Duke Břetislav I, dated 18 October 1045, making it one of the oldest documented settlements in this part of Bohemia. Why was the manor destroyed?

What survives on the site today?

Despite that early modern destruction, the building itself lived on in altered form. Today's Hvížďalka is a single-storey, rectangular structure under a hipped gable roof. It originally had a tower-like shape, but a later Classicist rebuilding gave it the more manor-house appearance visitors see now.
