Husův sbor (Olomouc)

Olomouc, Czechia

About this place

Husův sbor is a church of the Czechoslovak Hussite Church standing on the northwestern edge of Olomouc's historic centre. Listed among the immovable cultural monuments of the Czech Republic, its neoclassical, three-nave basilica form — crowned with a dome and fronted by a monumental staircase and heavy columns — sets it clearly apart from the Gothic and Baroque churches that otherwise define the city's skyline.

Where did this church come from?

The Olomouc congregation of the Czechoslovak Hussite Church was founded in 1923, at a time when the young denomination — established two years earlier as an alternative to Catholicism in the newly formed Czechoslovakia — was building its own places of worship across the country. The design was drawn up by architect Hubert Aust between 1924 and 1925, with construction carried out by František Petřík. The cornerstone was laid on 6 July 1925, chosen deliberately as the anniversary of Jan Hus's death, the church's namesake. Building work finished in 1926.

How do you get there?

The church stands at U Husova sboru 538 in Olomouc, a short walk from the historic core — roughly ten to fifteen minutes on foot from the Upper Square. Olomouc has good rail connections to Prague, Brno and Ostrava; from the main train station, the easiest way to reach the church is by tram or on foot through the city centre.

What's there to see?

The façade is the main draw: a broad flight of steps leads up to a row of massive columns, with a dome crowning the whole composition — giving the building the presence of a classical temple rather than a typical Central European parish church. Inside, the layout follows a three-nave basilica plan, typical of the larger Hussite congregation buildings erected between the wars. It's a solid example of the architectural language the young Hussite Church was developing in the 1920s, deliberately distinct from Catholic church design of the same period.

When should you visit?

Services take place every Sunday at 9:00 AM, the best opportunity to see the interior in active use. Outside service hours, access can be limited, so it's worth checking current opening arrangements with the local congregation beforehand. The surrounding area — a quiet, residential pocket at the edge of the centre — makes for a pleasant short walk away from the crowds around the main square.

Worth knowing

A second building with the same name stands in Olomouc's Hodolany district — a smaller prayer hall built in 1927 to a design by architect Rudolf Drobník. It's a separate structure and shouldn't be confused with this Husův sbor in the city centre.
