About this place
Husův sbor in Ostrava-Michálkovice is a church of the Czechoslovak Hussite Church, standing on the southern edge of Michalské náměstí, the central square of the Michálkovice district that today forms part of Ostrava. Alongside its role as a place of worship, the building also serves as a concert venue thanks to its favorable acoustics.
How was the church in Michálkovice built?
The construction plan was drawn up by the builder Otmar Pazourek from Moravská Ostrava. Groundworks for the foundations began on 10 November 1924, and the cornerstone, together with a memorial document, was laid on 17 May 1925. The project struggled with serious financial difficulties from the outset, which significantly extended the construction period — the first Christmas services in 1926 were held while the building was still unfinished. Only a loan taken out in mid-1927 made it possible to complete the works, and the church was officially opened on 11 September 1927.
What did the church go through during the war?
On 16 March 1945, during air raids on Ostrava, the building was hit indirectly, damaging its rear section. Traces of the wartime damage were repaired gradually over the following decades, and a more thorough renovation of the roof and towers took place between 2007 and 2010, restoring the church's original appearance.
What is the church used for today?
Husův sbor remains an active place of worship for the Czechoslovak Hussite Church community in Michálkovice, hosting regular services as well as church ceremonies such as weddings and funerals. Thanks to its good acoustic conditions, the building is also occasionally used as a concert venue, making it one of the notable spots for cultural life in the district.
