Hřbitov Opatovice

Opatovice, Czechia

About this place

Hřbitov Opatovice (Opatovice Cemetery) is a small rural municipal cemetery in Opatovice, a village in the Brno-venkov district of South Moravia, about 14 km south of Brno and 5 km northeast of Židlochovice. It serves a community with more than 650 years of recorded history, and the cemetery itself has its own multi-century story — from a medieval burial ground beside the church to the mid-19th-century cemetery still in use today.

Where is the cemetery located?

Opatovice, whose cadastral name is Opatovice u Rajhradu, lies in the Dyjsko-svratecký basin near the Dunávka stream. The village has around 1,200 residents and covers 6.15 km², and it falls under the municipal authority of Židlochovice. The cemetery itself sits along the road to neighboring Rajhrad, directly across from the site that was used for burials during the 19th century.

How has the cemetery changed over time?

The earliest cemetery in Opatovice predates 1645 and stood on the site now occupied by the village church. Between 1831 and 1865, burials took place on the northeastern edge of the village, along the road to Rajhrad; this older cemetery had a distinctive truncated-cone shape and could not be expanded because of deep pits on its western side. In 1865, a new cemetery was established on a plot across the road, consecrated that September by Abbot Gunther Kalivoda — and this is the cemetery still in use today. When human bones were uncovered in 1887 during construction of the new church's foundations, they were reburied in the corner near the entrance to the old cemetery site, which was then planted with acacia trees.

What can visitors see today?

At the center of the cemetery stands a stone cross from 1865, listed as a cultural monument and one of the few features that have survived largely unchanged since the cemetery's founding. A new mortuary building went up in 1986, when the cemetery wall was also repaired and a hedge was planted along the boundary with Rajhrad. The fencing and access road were upgraded in 2003, and a water fountain was installed by the wall in 2010. As of 2011, the cemetery held 207 documented graves — a modest number that reflects the size of the village it serves.

Who maintains the cemetery?

All repair and maintenance costs are covered by the municipality of Opatovice, which manages the site through its local government office. This arrangement is typical of small rural cemeteries in Moravia, where the municipality handles the physical upkeep while the local community preserves the memory of those buried there.
