Hrádníky

Hrádníky is a small settlement within the municipality of Zářecká Lhota in the Choceň area of eastern Bohemia, best known for the remains of a medieval fortified stronghold built on top of a much older prehistoric hillfort. It is a place where layers of history — from the Bronze Age to the late Middle Ages — sit stacked on a single modest hilltop above a river.

Excavations at the Hrádníky site produced a substantial collection of finds, documented by researcher David Vích in a 2016 study published in the journal Archaeologia historica. Among the recovered objects were pieces of horse and rider equipment, structural ironwork, and items of a military character, alongside agricultural tools and everyday objects used by the castle's inhabitants. Notable individual finds include a fragment of a folding balance (a portion of its beam) and silver ingots. The most striking discovery, however, was the torso of a reliquary cross — described by researchers as a genuinely exceptional find in the context of castle sites of this kind, giving Hrádníky significance that reaches beyond purely local or regional interest.

Zářecká Lhota itself has a history reaching back to the Middle Ages: the earliest written mention of the village dates to the 13th century, it appeared under the name "Lhota Kunšova" in 1397, and the first official record under its current name dates from 1417.
