Hrabanovská Černava

Lysá nad Labem, Czechia

About this place

Hrabanovská Černava is a national nature monument sitting right at the northwestern edge of Lysá nad Labem, in the Central Bohemian Region within the Nymburk district. The protected area covers just under 55 hectares and lies at roughly 186 metres above sea level, on ground where Cretaceous-era sediments surface along the southern rim of the Jizera Table.

What makes up Hrabanovská Černava?

The site is a broad complex of waterlogged meadows and peat bog, formed around the springs of a left-bank tributary of the Mlynařice stream, north of central Lysá nad Labem. It is a surviving remnant of the once much larger fen bogs that used to stretch across the Polabí lowlands. Today it stands as the largest preserved complex of this habitat type in the whole of the Czech Republic — a sedge-moss community of exceptional ecological value.

Why is this place so ecologically significant?

Because of how rare this ecosystem has become, the area was included in the European Natura 2000 network as a site of community importance. That status is well earned: within a relatively small footprint, an unusually wide range of endangered and protected plant species thrives here, adapted to permanently damp, mineral-rich soil. The site's scientific value reaches beyond botany. Hrabanovská Černava is also a key reference point for paleoecology, since layers of peat preserve a record of past environmental conditions, as well as for entomology, given the insects tied to wetland habitats, and for malacology, the study of molluscs, in this case the snails and bivalves characteristic of fen bogs.

How can you visit Hrabanovská Černava?

A nature trail runs directly along the edge of the reserve, connecting Čelákovice with Lysá nad Labem. It offers a convenient way to experience the landscape without disturbing the protected habitats, since most of the monument's area remains off-limits to visitors due to the fragility of the ecosystem and the need to safeguard the species that have survived here. Walking the trail still lets you take in the distinctive scenery of waterlogged meadows set against the farmland of the surrounding Polabí region, and understand why this small patch of land earned such strong protection.
