The building went up in 1739, commissioned by Henri de Thomas, Marquis de la Garde, a counselor at the Parlement de Provence. He left no heir, so the property passed to the Marc-Tripoli de Panisse-Passis family, who also owned the Château Borély in Marseille. The mansion is now generally known by their name, though older records also refer to it as the Hôtel de Thomas, after its original patron.
