About this place
Landek Park Mining Museum in Ostrava is the largest industrial museum in the Czech Republic, dedicated to the history of coal mining in the Ostrava-Karviná coalfield. It sits in the Petřkovice district at the foot of Landek hill, on the grounds of the former Anselm mine. The 10-hectare complex combines an open-air display of mining machinery with an underground tour that gives visitors a real sense of what a miner's working life looked like decades ago.
What can you see there?
The centerpiece of a visit is a descent 15 meters underground in a historic mine cage, followed by a roughly 250-meter guided walk through former mine corridors. The route shows extraction equipment, tunnel support methods, and the conditions miners worked in over the more than one hundred years the mine was in operation.
Above ground, an extensive outdoor exhibition displays historic mining machines and equipment, including headframes and locomotives, alongside a mine rescue exhibition considered one of the largest of its kind in the world. A separate attraction is the reconstructed settlement of mammoth hunters, referencing archaeological finds made in the Landek area. The grounds also work well for a walk or a picnic, since beyond the exhibits the site doubles as a recreational park.
How do you get there?
The museum's address is Pod Landekem 64 in Ostrava-Petřkovice. From the city center, take tram line 1, 2, or 8 to the Křižíková stop, then continue by bus (lines 34, 52, 56, 66, 67, or 68) to the Hornické muzeum stop, followed by about a ten-minute walk to the entrance. Visitors arriving by car can use the free parking lot next to the museum.
When should you visit?
The museum is open year-round, though hours and tour frequency vary by season. From April 1 to September 30 it's open daily from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with tours departing every hour and the last one starting at 4:00 PM. During the winter season (October 1 to March 31) the museum is closed on Mondays, and from Tuesday to Sunday tours start at 10:00 AM, noon, 2:00 PM, and 4:00 PM. Plan enough time for your visit, since the full underground route takes around two hours.
How much does admission cost?
There are two tour options. The long route (about 2 hours) costs 150 CZK for a full-price ticket and 90 CZK for a discounted one. The short route (about an hour) costs 90 CZK and 50 CZK respectively. It's worth checking current prices and the schedule on the museum's website before your visit, since they can change.
