About this place
Holy Trinity Church is a modest Roman Catholic church in the center of Dobříš, a small town in Central Bohemia, in the Příbram District of the Czech Republic. It stands on the site of a former Loreto chapel, built in the 1670s by František Maxmilián, Count Mansfeld, who owned the Dobříš estate at the time. The present building came much later, commissioned by a later owner of the same estate.
How to get there?
The church sits right in the center of Dobříš, close to the town's main streets, making it a natural starting point for a walk around the historic core. Its coordinates are roughly 49.782°N, 14.178°E. Dobříš is close to Prague, so the church works well as part of a day trip that also includes the nearby Dobříš chateau.
What will you see?
The church was built between 1794 and 1797, commissioned by František Gundakar I, Prince of Colloredo-Mannsfeld, a later owner of the Dobříš estate. Architecturally it is a single-nave rectangular building, with the presbytery closed off by a semicircular apse — a modest form typical of provincial churches from that period, but with a clearly documented history of later renovations.
The consecration was originally planned for October 27, 1797, though no records survive confirming that it actually took place on that date. The church underwent its first major repair in 1867, initiated by the parish priest František Badůň. During that renovation the main altar was restored, and a painting of the Holy Trinity by the painter Josef Hellich was placed on it. Subsequent building work and alterations were carried out based on designs by Antonín Wiehl, a respected Czech architect active at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, known for his work in the national neo-Renaissance style.
Inside, the Hellich painting on the main altar is the standout feature — one of the few furnishings whose history is well documented. Despite its modest size, the building's silhouette fits neatly into the historic center of Dobříš and serves as one of the town's recognizable landmarks.
When should you visit?
The church is best visited during the day, when the building is well lit and the surrounding streets of the old town are lively. Dobříš is a quiet place, so crowds are not a concern — it is worth checking locally, though, whether a service is taking place on the day of your visit, since as an active parish church its primary purpose is serving the local congregation. Local events that open historic religious buildings to visitors, held in various Czech towns throughout the year, can be a good opportunity to see the interior.
