About this place
The Church of the Holy Trinity in Javorník is a Baroque parish church in the Jeseník district of the Czech Republic, regarded as the town's second most important landmark after the Jánský Vrch castle complex. Standing within Javorník's historic conservation zone, it has shaped the town's skyline for nearly three centuries.
When was the church built?
The decision to build a new church was made in 1715. Construction ran from 1716 to 1723 to designs by the master builder M. J. Klein, and the finished church was consecrated on 29 July 1725. It rose during a period of recovery and renewal for Javorník, which had suffered heavily in the previous century — first during the Thirty Years' War, then through a subsequent plague outbreak. The new Baroque building was meant to mark the town's revival after these hardships.
What does the church look like?
The church is a single-nave, oriented structure on a rectangular plan, narrowing toward the chancel, with a tower set into the western façade. This layout — a front-facing tower with a narrower eastern apse — is typical of Baroque parish churches built in small towns and rural areas of the region. In 1755 a circular chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows was added to the main body of the church, giving the otherwise simple rectangular plan an additional, centrally accented architectural feature.
What happened to the church after the fire?
The building's history has not been without dramatic setbacks. A town fire in 1825 destroyed the church tower and part of the roof, along with the choir loft and its organ. Repairs were initially only provisional. The church did not receive its current appearance, including the rebuilt tower, until 1866, when local carpenter and builder Alois Utner of Javorník carried out the work that shaped the silhouette visible today.
Has the church been restored recently?
Yes. Between 1994 and 2001 the church underwent a comprehensive restoration covering the roof, façade and interior. Once the work was finished, the church was reconsecrated on 22 April 2001, closing out a long process of returning the building to proper technical and aesthetic condition.
