Holy Trinity Church

Vysoké Mýto, Czechia

About this place

Holy Trinity Church (Kostel Nejsvětější Trojice) stands in the middle of Jungmannovy sady, the largest park in Vysoké Mýto, a small town in the Czech Republic's Pardubice Region. Built in 1543, it began life as a cemetery church, serving a graveyard that surrounded the building until the early 20th century.

What does the church look like?

Construction was led by master builder Blažej of Litomyšl, and the church was extended at the end of the 16th century under master Trebka. Later Baroque and Neo-Renaissance alterations shaped the building into its current form. It is a small, single-nave Renaissance church that — unlike most Czech parish churches — has no bell tower, topped instead by a modest sanctus bell turret. Its most distinctive feature is a richly decorated gable with sculptural and stucco ornamentation, the work of Prague sculptor B. Vlček.

Where is it and how do you get there?

The church sits inside Jungmannovy sady, right next to the historic town center, making it an easy stop on foot from the main square — just a few minutes' walk away. The park itself is a popular local recreation spot, so visitors often come across the church while strolling through the greenery rather than seeking it out as a standalone destination.

When can you visit the interior?

The interior is open to the public on only two occasions each year: Open Monuments Day and Christmas Eve, when a live nativity scene is staged in front of the church. Outside those dates, the building can only be admired from the outside — which is still enough to appreciate its distinctive gable and compact silhouette.

What is its protection status?

Since 1958, Holy Trinity Church has been listed as a protected cultural monument of the Czech Republic, placing it alongside other safeguarded historic sites in Vysoké Mýto, such as the town's historic square and its surviving fortification towers.
