Holubník

Holubník is a rocky summit in the Jizera Mountains rising to 1,071 metres, just south of Hejnice, right in the middle of the Hejnice Ridge (Hejnický hřeben) in the Liberec Region. It's one of the favourite hiking destinations in this part of the range — a massive rock outcrop at the top, crowned with a wooden cross, gives a full circular view over the surrounding countryside and counts among the finest viewpoints in the whole of the Jizera Mountains.

Where does the name come from?

The name has a surprisingly technical origin. It comes from a long-vanished geodetic surveying device once used to measure the terrain, whose shape resembled a dovecote — hence Holubník, from the Czech word "holubník" (dovecote). The structure itself disappeared from the landscape long ago, but the name stuck and today applies to the whole summit.

What will you see at the top?

The summit of Holubník carries a roughly ten-metre rock formation — a typical granite outcrop for the Jizera Mountains, somewhat harder to reach right at the peak, but it's exactly from there that the best panorama opens up. From the flat top you can see the Frýdlant region, part of the Jizera Mountains together with the Bedřichov reservoir, the Ještěd ridge, the Krkonoše (Giant) Mountains, Český ráj (Bohemian Paradise), and the Lusatian Mountains. It's one of those viewpoints where, on a clear day, several mountain ranges come into view at once.

How do you get to Holubník?

A red-marked hiking trail leads to the summit, connecting Ptačí kupy (1,013 m) with Holubník Saddle (999 m). The route requires no special equipment or climbing experience — it's a straightforward mountain walk, accessible to most hikers with average fitness. The most convenient starting point is Hejnice itself, from where trails run deep into the Jizera Mountains massif toward the Hejnice Ridge.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring and autumn are the best seasons to climb Holubník, when the air is clear and the views from the summit reach furthest and sharpest. In summer the trail gets busier, so it's worth setting out early to beat the crowds at the rocky viewpoint. In winter the path can be icy and calls for caution, but the sight of the snow-covered Krkonoše and Jizera ridge more than rewards the effort.
