Hluchov

Hluchov, Czechia

About this place

Hluchov is a small village and municipality in the Prostějov District of the Olomouc Region, roughly 12 km northwest of Prostějov along the road to Konice. Around 300 people live here today, well below the village's historical peak of nearly 600 residents recorded in 1930, when it had 109 houses.

Just how old is this village?

Hluchov's first written record dates back to 1131, when it appears as an estate belonging to the Olomouc chapter, obligated to pay dues to the church. That makes it one of the more anciently documented settlements in this part of Moravia. Nearly two centuries later ownership had passed to a man named Budík of Hluchov, and afterward to the lords of Konice.

Who took over the village afterward?

In 1385, the lords of Konice granted Hluchov to a certain Jarek of Hluchov in exchange for military service. Jarek later bought a manor in nearby Pěnčín and became an independent lord over both Hluchov and Pěnčín, no longer answering to his former overlords. A surviving record from 1583 mentions a local manor house that also ran a brewery at the time.

What remains of the old manor?

At the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries a fortified manor house was built in Hluchov; it was rebuilt in the 18th century into a Baroque residence. The building survives in altered form and today houses the municipal office — making it the most tangible trace of the village's former lords.

What else is there to see?

A parish church in Hluchov was already recorded in 1363, confirming the settlement served as a local center as far back as the Middle Ages. On the village green stands the Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, built between 1805 and 1808, alongside a stone cross from 1863 and a memorial to the victims of the world wars. Among the village's other listed monuments is a Baroque stone cross from 1761 — over a century older than the one by the chapel.

How do you get to Hluchov?

The village sits in the Olomouc Region on the road connecting Prostějov and Konice, so arriving by car from Prostějov is the most practical option. This is quiet farming country without dedicated tourist infrastructure — visitors typically pass through as part of a wider trip around the Hana region rather than treating it as a standalone destination.
