About this place
Habrovany is a small village and municipality in the South Moravian Region, in the Vyškov District, about 12 km from the town of Vyškov and south of Brno. As of 2022 it had 878 residents. The name can be confusing online, since two Czech villages share it — the other one sits in the Ústí nad Labem Region, hundreds of kilometres to the northwest — but it's this Moravian Habrovany that has a small château and church worth a look on a drive through the South Moravian Region.
What is there to see in Habrovany?
The village centres on a modest, single-storey château standing at its southern edge, surrounded by a park. It doesn't rival the grand aristocratic seats found elsewhere in Moravia, but its history stretches back to the medieval period, making it a worthwhile stop between Brno and Vyškov.
How has the Habrovany château changed over the centuries?
A fortified manor house (tvrz) once stood on the site, built in the first half of the 14th century. It didn't survive the Hussite wars unscathed — the building was damaged, and by 1446 it was recorded as abandoned. Jan of Šelmberk had it restored after the mid-15th century, and in the mid-16th century the Dubčanský of Zdenín family rebuilt the seat into a single-storey Renaissance château. The Jesuits held the estate next, from 1635 to 1773. The building owes its current, Classicist appearance to a reconstruction commissioned by the Herring family in 1825.
What stands next to the château?
Right beside it is the Church of the Holy Trinity, part of the parish based in Královopolské Vážany. Construction began around 1523 under Jan Dubčanský of Zdenín — the same family that would soon rebuild the neighbouring château — and the two buildings have formed a small, connected cluster at the edge of the village for centuries.
How do you get to Habrovany?
The village sits close to the road connecting Brno and Vyškov, making it an easy stop for anyone exploring the region at their own pace without a major detour. Vyškov is the nearest town with fuller tourist infrastructure and accommodation, and Brno is within easy reach for a day trip.
Who is Habrovany worth a stop for?
It suits travellers who enjoy the quieter, lesser-known corners of Moravia — places without crowds but with genuine history behind them. It works best as a brief stop along a route rather than a full-day destination on its own.
