About this place
The Gallery of Fine Arts in Ostrava (Galerie výtvarného umění v Ostravě, GVUO) is the oldest art gallery in the city and one of the leading exhibition institutions in Czech Silesia, housed in the historic Dům umění (House of Art) in the very centre of Ostrava.
Where does the collection come from?
The story begins in the 1920s. In 1923, two local art collectors, builder František Jureček and civil servant Alois Sprušil, founded an association dedicated to constructing and maintaining an exhibition pavilion in Moravská Ostrava. That effort produced Dům umění, a Functionalist building completed in 1926 and designed by architects Fiala and Wallenfels. Jureček later bequeathed his private art collection to the Society of the House of Art, and that donation became the core of what is now the gallery's holdings. The institution itself was formally established as a regional gallery in 1952.
What can you see inside?
Today the GVUO collection comprises more than 23,000 works of art — paintings, sculptures, prints and works on paper spanning historical to contemporary periods. Pieces are regularly lent out to major exhibitions in the Czech Republic and abroad, so the permanent display is periodically refreshed as works travel and return. Alongside the permanent collection, the gallery runs a busy schedule of temporary exhibitions, ranging from solo retrospectives of individual artists to thematic group shows, often produced in partnership with other cultural institutions.
The building itself is worth seeing on its own merits: Dům umění is considered one of the architectural gems of Ostrava, and its Functionalist design from the 1920s is part of what makes a visit worthwhile even before you reach the artwork.
Who are the education programmes for?
The gallery runs an extensive educational programme, including creative workshops open to visitors of every age, from toddlers to seniors, as well as dedicated activities for school groups. On top of that, GVUO hosts guided tours, lectures, literary readings, concerts and festivals, which makes the institution function as a genuine cultural hub rather than just a display space.
How do you get there and when should you visit?
Dům umění stands in central Ostrava, within easy walking distance of the main square and well served by the city's tram network, making it a natural stop on any walk through the historic centre. It's worth checking the current exhibition schedule before visiting, since the temporary programme changes regularly and certain days may be reserved for openings or special events. The gallery is a solid choice for a rainy day or a winter visit, when Ostrava's outdoor attractions are less appealing.
