Fortica

Fortica is a medieval fortress overlooking Karlobag, a small coastal town in the Lika region facing the island of Pag. The square structure, dating from the 13th or 14th century, sits on a raised plateau about 250 meters from the shoreline, with a defensive tower at its center. For centuries a chaplain and a small garrison were stationed inside, guarding the settlement's safety and keeping watch over ship traffic heading toward Pag.

How do you get to Fortica?

Karlobag sits directly on the Adriatic coastal road (D8), between Senj and Zadar, so arriving by car is the easiest option. The fortress rises just above the town center — a short but steep walk uphill from the main square, Trg Giardin. There's no public transport running straight to the gate, but the climb from downtown takes only a matter of minutes on foot.

Part of the old fortress has been turned into the "Kava" Mediterranean garden, home to a mosaic gallery. The garden is fragrant with lavender, thyme, sage, rosemary, santolina, oregano, marjoram and bay laurel — plants typical of the Lika coastline. Remnants of an old cistern that once supplied the fortress with water are still visible on the grounds. The name "Kava" is sometimes linked to a former quarry, though it's more likely that military barracks once stood on the site. The garden is privately owned today, and visitors can take in both the historic walls and the mosaic exhibition alongside the landscaped greenery.

Why climb up the hill?

Fortica is one of Karlobag's landmarks and a natural viewpoint, offering a panorama over the town, the Velebit Channel, and the island of Pag across the water. This is the very spot from which ship traffic was monitored for centuries — today the same view rewards visitors chasing a bird's-eye photo without having to hike up Velebit itself.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring and early summer are ideal, when the herbs in the Kava garden are in bloom and the heat hasn't yet made the climb uncomfortable. In summer, the town buzzes with the ferry traffic to Pag, and Fortica becomes a natural stop on a short walk through Karlobag. In autumn and winter the hill is quieter, and the views are just as sharp thanks to clearer air.
