Fort George

Fort George is an early 19th-century British fortress overlooking the town of Vis in Croatia. Built between 1812 and 1813 during the Napoleonic Wars, it now combines historical charm with modern cultural offerings, including a restaurant and art gallery.

Why was the fort built and what was its purpose?

The fortress was constructed under orders from the British governor of the island, Colonel George Duncan Robertson, during the period when Great Britain controlled Vis from 1811 to 1815. It was named in honor of King George III. The construction was driven by concerns about Napoleonic expansion in the Adriatic – the Royal Navy needed a strong defensive base to prevent the French from controlling the sea and the Venetian shipyards.

Fort George was designed as a light cannon and musketry defense, working in cooperation with three Martello towers: Bentick and Robertson behind the fort and Wellington across the bay. The international garrison included free Italians, Swiss Guards, Corsican sharpshooters, and soldiers from the British 35th Regiment of Foot.

For nearly two centuries, the structure served military purposes for successive armies. In 2013, renovation transformed the fort into a cultural and dining destination. Fort George sits on a hill just above Vis – the walk from the town center takes around 15–20 minutes. The site is open to visitors, with the most photogenic moments occurring in late afternoon and evening as the sun sets over the Adriatic.
