About this place
The Evangelical Church in Boskovice is a functionalist house of worship belonging to the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren, standing on Náměstí 9. května, the town's main square. It is the only building in Boskovice constructed in the functionalist style, which sets it apart from the older, more traditional architecture surrounding it.
How did the congregation get its own church?
The story of the Boskovice congregation goes back to 1924, when a preaching station was set up inside the local gymnasium (secondary school), giving believers a place to gather for services. The borrowed room soon proved too small, so the community began planning a proper church building of its own. A suitable plot was bought from the town in spring 1935, and construction finally went ahead between 1940 and 1941, funded entirely by the Evangelical congregation itself. The church was solemnly opened with its first service on 29 June 1941.
Who designed the building?
The design came from architect Karel Fabiánek, who gave the structure a clean, functionalist form typical of the interwar period. The tower rising above the square is topped with a symbol of an open book and a chalice, referencing both the Hussite tradition and Evangelical liturgy. The white façade is marked by tall, continuous vertical windows that run along the tower and the side walls alike — a hallmark of the functionalist style and a clear contrast to the historicist and Baroque churches common elsewhere in the region.
What can you see when visiting?
Standing right on the main square, the church is an easy stop on any walk through central Boskovice. It has been officially listed as a cultural heritage monument since 1996 and is described as the town's only surviving example of functionalist architecture — a fact that draws not just churchgoers but also visitors interested in 20th-century design. The building remains an active place of worship for the local Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren congregation and also hosts public events open to residents and tourists alike, including concerts held around Christmas time.
When is the best time to visit?
The church is best combined with a walk around the town square and historic centre of Boskovice, where daylight brings out the contrast between the white walls and the vertical window bands. It is worth checking the local events calendar, since concerts are occasionally held inside the church in the run-up to Christmas, offering a rare chance to see the interior as well as the exterior.
