estany Gémena de Baix

Estany Gémena de Baix is a glacial mountain lake in the municipality of la Vall de Boí, in the Catalan Pyrenees. It sits at 2,234 metres above sea level in the northeastern part of the Llubriqueto valley, right on the edge of Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park. Its name comes from the Latin "stagna gemina" — "twin lakes" — a reference to its neighbour, Estany Gémena de Dalt, which lies higher up in the same valley.

The lake covers just under 8 hectares and reaches a maximum depth of 21 metres. Water flows in from the north, fed by its twin lake Estany Gémena de Dalt, and drains out to the south toward the Llubriqueto waterfall. The setting is classic high-Pyrenean terrain — bare granite ridges, patches of mountain pine, and alpine meadows, with the lake's surface mirroring the surrounding peaks on clear days.

There is no road access to Estany Gémena de Baix — reaching it means a multi-hour hike. The trail through the Llubriqueto valley is well marked but climbs steep sections, and the one-way walk takes roughly three hours. Most people set out from one of the villages in the la Vall de Boí municipality.

When should you visit?

The best window for this hike runs from June to October, when the trail is clear of snow and Pyrenean weather is more favorable for long mountain routes. Outside this period, lingering snow and harsher high-altitude conditions can make the approach difficult or unsafe.
