Estany de Montcortès

Estany de Montcortès is a small karst lake in the municipality of Baix Pallars, in the province of Lleida, right in the heart of the Catalan Pyrenees. Sitting at roughly 1,030 metres above sea level, it is one of only a handful of Pyrenean lakes — alongside the Basturs lakes — that were not formed by glacial activity.

What will you see there?

The lake has an almost perfectly circular shape, with a shoreline about 1,320 metres long. Its maximum depth reaches 30 metres, and unlike most mountain lakes, it has no river or stream feeding it — all its water comes from an underground spring. This lack of surface inflow keeps the water remarkably still, often turning the surface into a mirror for the surrounding hills.

The area around the lake is protected under Catalonia's Natural Areas of Interest Plan (PEIN) and is part of the Natura 2000 network. That protection reflects the lake's ecological value: it is one of the more important breeding and stopover sites for waterbirds in the Pyrenees, drawing migratory species such as mallards and ospreys.

How do you get there?

The lake lies right next to the village of Montcortès de Pallars, part of the Baix Pallars municipality. It's reached via mountain roads from Sort or La Pobla de Segur, the nearest larger towns in the Pallars Sobirà and Pallars Jussà regions. A gentle, mostly flat path circles the lake, and walking the full loop takes under an hour with no particular fitness required.
