Estany de Bassiero is a small mountain lake in the municipality of Alt Àneu, in the Pallars Sobirà county, right in the heart of the Catalan Pyrenees. It sits at the foot of Pic de Bassiero (2,887 m), the highest point of the north-east-facing basin that surrounds it, next to the Alt Pirineu Natural Park and close to the boundary of the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park. It's a destination for hikers who want to get away from the busier trails of the Àneu valley while still experiencing the region's classic scenery of glacial lakes, granite ridgelines and alpine meadows.

How do you get to estany de Bassiero?

Most routes in this area start from La Peülla, a small settlement in the Alt Àneu municipality, from where trails head up the valley towards Estany Gerber and, further on, towards the Bassiero massif. The stretch to the lake itself calls for a reasonable level of fitness — the ground is rocky, occasionally steep, and the final approach runs above the treeline. It's worth planning for a full day out, since the return leg along the same path takes time and weather in the high Pyrenees can shift quickly. A good rest point along the way is the Refugi Mataró, by Estany Gerber, from where further trails branch off towards peaks such as Pic d'Amitges and Pic de Saboredo.

Estany de Bassiero is a typical glacial lake — small, with clear, cold water, hemmed in by rocky slopes and largely free of tall vegetation. Nearby, in the same valley, sits the much larger Estany Gerber, one of the few lakes in the region that has kept its natural state without being altered by hydraulic works — it covers roughly 14.4 hectares and reaches depths of up to 63 metres, making it one of the deeper lakes in the Pyrenees. Towering over the valley is Pic de Bassiero itself, visible from many points along the route, and on a clear day the higher stretches of the trail open up views over the surrounding ridges of the Vall d'Àneu.

When's the best time to visit?

Summer, from June to September, is the best window for hiking here, once snow has cleared from the higher sections and days are long enough for a full-day trip. In May and June, snow can still linger higher up, making the final approach to the lake harder going. In winter and early spring, the area draws snowshoeing visitors instead — the nearby Estany de Gerber is a popular snowshoe destination — though reaching estany de Bassiero itself at that time of year requires experience and the right gear.
