Equinoxe

Équinoxe is the scène nationale (national performing arts venue) of Châteauroux, one of only four such institutions in the Centre-Val de Loire region and the cultural anchor of the entire Indre department. Standing on Avenue Charles de Gaulle close to the town centre, it has shaped Châteauroux's cultural calendar for three decades, hosting everything from theatre and dance to circus, music and shows for younger audiences.

Where does the venue come from?

The building was designed by Parisian architect Jean-Louis Godivier. Construction took three years and cost 18.6 million euros, with the official opening held on 15 October 1994. Six years later, in 2000, the French Ministry of Culture awarded the venue the official "scène nationale" label, recognising the artistic quality of the programme built by the Équinoxe team. Since then it has ranked among the region's key cultural institutions, alongside the three other scènes nationales of Centre-Val de Loire.

The complex combines several purpose-built spaces. The main auditorium seats 1,200 and hosts the season's largest productions, while a smaller 200-seat hall is used for more intimate performances and meetings with artists.
