About this place
Drbákov – Albertovy skály is a national nature reserve stretching along the right bank of the Vltava River, near the village of Nalžovické Podhájí in the Příbram district of Central Bohemia. Covering more than 64 hectares of rocky river-valley slopes, it ranks among the most ecologically valuable sites in this part of the Czech Republic.
How did the reserve come to be?
Protection here did not arrive all at once. The southern section, known as Drbákovské tisy, was first protected back in 1933 because of its yew trees — a species that is now rare and protected across much of Europe. It wasn't until 1977 that the area was expanded to include the neighboring Albertovy (originally Bílé) skály, creating the single, much larger protected complex visitors can explore today.
What makes this place special?
The reserve was established to protect plant communities growing on the rocky slopes of the Vltava valley in the Central Vltava region. It combines natural forests with a yew component alongside rocky steppe communities — habitats that are uncommon elsewhere in this part of Bohemia. The bedrock consists of volcanic rocks of the Jílové formation, including basalts, andesites and rhyolites, along with granodiorites and quartz porphyries. This geological diversity directly supports the richness of plant and animal life found here.
What wildlife can you find here?
The reserve provides good living conditions for a wide range of animals. Among the birds recorded here are birds of prey, including eagles and sea eagles. Endangered and rare species of mollusks, spiders and insects have also been documented, making the site an important location for invertebrate conservation in the region.
How can you explore the reserve?
A 7.5-kilometer nature trail runs through Drbákov and Albertovy skály. The route follows footpaths along the valley slopes and rocky ledges, with chains and stairs installed on the more demanding sections to help visitors get through safely. That combination makes for a walk that pairs scenic views with a bit of genuine physical challenge — sturdy footwear is a good idea.
Where exactly is it located?
The reserve lies in the municipality of Chotilsko, on the right bank of the Vltava, within the Příbram district of Central Bohemia. Its position by the river and its rocky terrain give the area particularly scenic views over the valley.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Drbákov – Albertovy skály reserve suitable for a family trip? Why was this particular site protected? It was protected for its unusual combination of natural yew forests and rocky steppe communities on volcanic bedrock, which together support habitats for numerous rare and endangered animal species.
When was the reserve established? Protection began in 1933 with the smaller Drbákovské tisy area, and the reserve took its current, much larger shape in 1977 after Albertovy skály was added.
