About this place
Dolní Šárka is a small but ecologically significant protected area on the northwestern edge of Prague, near the districts of Lysolaje and Podbaba, within the cadastral territory of Dejvice (Prague 6). It sits at the mouth of the Šárka Creek valley, where the stream runs down toward the Vltava, and forms part of the wider Šárka-Lysolaje nature park. Despite the similar name, it is a separate and distinct site from the much better-known Divoká Šárka — smaller, quieter, and rarely crowded with visitors.
What exactly is Dolní Šárka?
It is a natural monument (přírodní památka) that has been under protection since 27 May 1982. Its total area is just over six hectares, and rather than forming a single continuous plot, it is made up of three separate localities named after historical farmsteads once found in the Šárka valley: Žežulka, Šatovka, and Duchoňská. Because of this scattered layout, exploring Dolní Šárka feels more like a series of short walks than one continuous trail.
Why was it protected?
The site was designated for protection primarily because of its outcrops of Proterozoic rock — among the oldest geological formations found in the Prague region — together with thermophilic rocky steppes and shrubland that host protected and endangered plant and animal species. This combination of ancient exposed bedrock and a warm, dry microclimate supporting xerothermic vegetation is what makes the site stand out on Prague's nature map.
What is there to see?
The woodland here is dominated by ash, field maple, and sessile oak, with wild service tree and apple trees appearing in places. On the rocky, sun-exposed grasslands grow plant species typical of dry, warm habitats that have largely disappeared from the more built-up parts of the city. The forest also serves as breeding ground for birds, including wrens, dunnocks, and European robins.
Getting there and visiting
Dolní Šárka is accessible via a network of forest paths, and a marked blue tourist trail also runs through the area. It offers an easy way to step away from the city bustle without traveling far from central Prague — the site lies almost at the edge of residential neighborhoods, yet its light visitor traffic keeps it feeling wild and undisturbed.

Since when has the area been protected? It has held natural monument status since 27 May 1982.
How big is Dolní Šárka? Just over six hectares, split across three separate localities: Žežulka, Šatovka, and Duchoňská.
What is the main reason for its protection? Outcrops of Proterozoic rock along with thermophilic rocky steppes and shrubland home to protected and endangered species.
Is there a marked trail through the area? Yes, a marked blue tourist trail crosses the site, in addition to forest paths.
