Divadlo Kalich

Praha, Czechia

About this place

Divadlo Kalich is one of Prague's best-known private theatres, running daily performances in the very heart of the city since 1 November 1999. In November 2022 it marked 23 years of continuous operation without public subsidies, a rare feat among Prague theatres — the venue funds itself entirely through ticket sales.

Where is Divadlo Kalich located?

The theatre occupies a historic building in central Prague whose story goes back to the 17th century. It was designed by the noted Baroque architects Giovanni Domenico Orsi de Orsini and Anselmo Martino Lurago as part of the Discalced Carmelites' monastery attached to the Church of St. Havel. Today's auditorium originally served as the monastery's refectory, the monks' dining hall, and it still preserves early Baroque vaulting, original stucco decoration, and ceiling paintings with biblical themes dating from 1730–1740.

How has the building changed over time?

The space underwent a major overhaul in 1938, when architect Jaroslav Rössler converted the hall into a prominent café. The theatre's actual history as a stage only began after 1993, when the interior was reconstructed again and became home to the black-light theatre company All Colours Theatre. What had been a dilapidated former storage space grew into a modern, barrier-free chamber theatre equipped to a first-class European technical standard.

What can visitors see at Divadlo Kalich?

The theatre opened with an original Czech musical production of "Hamlet," and musicals have remained the backbone of its programme ever since. The genre draws audiences looking for high-production-value entertainment that blends music, dance, and acting inside a historic yet thoroughly modernised interior.

How popular is the venue?

Since opening, Divadlo Kalich has welcomed more than 3 million spectators. It has repeatedly been named the most-visited private theatre in the Czech Republic, underlining its place among Prague's leading entertainment venues alongside the city's more classical, state-run cultural institutions.

Frequently asked questions

Is Divadlo Kalich a state-run theatre? No. It is a private stage that sustains itself entirely through ticket revenue, without public subsidies — an unusual model among Prague theatres.

What is worth noticing in the building besides the show itself? Look out for the auditorium's preserved Baroque vaulting, stucco work, and 18th-century ceiling paintings, remnants of the space's earlier life as a monastery refectory.

What kind of repertoire does the theatre focus on? Mostly musicals — the genre that launched the theatre and still defines its identity today.

Where exactly is Divadlo Kalich located? Right in the historic centre of Prague, in a building once tied to the Discalced Carmelites' monastery next to the Church of St. Havel.
