Děd

Beroun, Czechia

About this place

Děd is a hill rising just above Beroun, a favorite walking destination for residents of this Central Bohemian town. It reaches an elevation of roughly 493 meters, sitting northwest of the town center between Beroun itself and the small settlement of Zdejcina. Prague lies less than 30 kilometers away, which makes Děd an easy half-day or full-day trip without needing to stay overnight.

How do you get there?

The simplest approach is on foot straight from Beroun's main square — a return route to the summit typically runs 8 to 10 kilometers with around 300 meters of total ascent. Most of the path follows wide forest tracks that stay shady even on hot days, with only a short, noticeably steep stretch right at the start as the trail climbs out of town. The walk works well as a loop, coming back down a different way than you went up. Beroun has direct rail links to Prague, so many visitors arrive by train and continue on foot from the station.

What will you see?

At the summit stands a stone lookout tower from 1893, built by the Club of Czech Tourists to a design by architect Jindřich Muldner. It's considered the oldest stone lookout tower in Bohemia — 12 meters tall, reached by roughly 60 steps, and shaped like a fairy-tale castle turret that stands out sharply against the surrounding landscape. Unfortunately, the tower has been closed to visitors since 2022 due to its poor structural condition, so it's best treated as a landmark to admire from outside rather than a viewpoint you can climb.

Near the summit you'll also find the neo-Gothic Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows (Panny Marie Bolestné), another waypoint along the walking routes around Děd. The forested slopes make for quiet walking well away from town traffic, and the same hillside is popular with mountain bikers — several marked trails of varying difficulty run through the Děd and Zdejcina area.

When should you visit?

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, with mild temperatures suited to longer walks and forest that isn't weighed down by summer heat. In summer, though, the tree cover along most of the route still makes for a pleasant walk even on warmer days. Since the tower itself is off-limits, the appeal here is really the walk and the open stretches of hillside, which makes Děd a worthwhile destination year-round.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the hike to the top take? A typical loop route from Beroun's town center covers 8 to 10 kilometers with about 300 meters of elevation gain — a comfortable half-day outing for most reasonably fit walkers.
