Cristo del Robledo

Cristo del Robledo is a large hilltop sculpture of Christ overlooking Real Sitio de San Ildefonso, in the province of Segovia, at the foot of the Sierra de Guadarrama. The figure stands about 2.5 meters tall and is mounted on an 8-meter cross, making it a visible landmark for hikers exploring the surrounding trails.

A brief history

The first cross with a figure of Christ was raised on this spot in 1954. The current sculpture, which replaced the original, dates from June 1997. The site has a military past as well — between 1942 and 1972 it hosted a University Militia Camp (Campamento de Milicias Universitarias), where Spanish university students carried out compulsory military training. Little physical trace of the camp remains today, and the location has since taken on a quieter, more contemplative character.

How to get there

Cristo del Robledo sits within the El Robledo recreational area, on Monte Matas, close to the Pontón dam, roughly 3 kilometers from the center of La Granja de San Ildefonso. A marked footpath leads to the sculpture — the popular circular route (Ruta circular al Cristo del Robledo) typically takes under an hour one way. The walk is best started from the parking area near the dam, or directly from town if you have more time to spare.
