Cova Simanya

Cova Simanya is the largest and best-known cave in the Sant Llorenç del Munt i l'Obac massif, located in the municipality of Sant Llorenç Savall, in the province of Barcelona. How to get there?

Cova Simanya sits within the Sant Llorenç del Munt i l'Obac natural park, right by the village of Sant Llorenç Savall. The entrance itself is wide and unmistakable, setting it apart from many of the smaller, harder-to-reach cavities scattered across the massif.

The mouth of Cova Simanya is more than 10 meters wide, making it one of the most impressive entrances in the entire massif. The main entrance gallery stretches nearly 100 meters before opening into a spacious chamber known as Font de l'Oca, decorated with stalactite formations. From there, the cave splits into two further galleries measuring 46 and 43 meters. In total, the system runs to 372 meters of passageway, making Cova Simanya the largest cave in the whole Sant Llorenç del Munt massif.

The stalactite formations inside remain in good condition, though they are fragile — visitors should move carefully and avoid touching the rock structures. The cave also holds significant archaeological value: excavations carried out in 1930 uncovered a large quantity of Eneolithic pottery (early Bronze Age), evidence of a prehistoric community's continuous presence at the site over many centuries.

Spring and autumn are the best seasons, when temperatures in the natural park are mild and the approach trails aren't baked by summer heat. In summer, it's worth setting out early in the morning to avoid the hottest hours on the exposed sections of trail.
