Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Mnichovice

Božkov, Czechia

About this place

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Mnichovice stands in the northeastern corner of Masaryk Square, right at the heart of this small town east of Prague, in the Prague-East district of the Czech Republic. It functions as a Roman Catholic parish church and is listed as an immovable cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

How far back does the site's history go?

The settlement itself traces back to 1134, when Benedictine monks from Sázava Monastery founded the village that eventually gave the whole town its name. Just six years later, in 1140, Abbot Silvestr had a basilica built on the site, dedicated to Saint Michael and all the heavenly powers. That original structure was Romanesque in character and was later remodeled in the Gothic style, following the same pattern seen in many churches across the region as architectural fashions shifted over the centuries.

Why is today's church Baroque rather than Gothic?

On August 23, 1746, a fire swept through the town and destroyed both the church and much of the surrounding settlement. A new church, this time in the Baroque style, was raised on the surviving medieval foundations. It was consecrated on September 8, 1754 by the Prague bishop Antonín Vokoun. That Baroque building, erected over the older Romanesque-Gothic base, is the one still standing on the square today.

What makes the interior distinctive?

The church's best-known feature is a pulpit carved in the shape of a whale, with a scene at its base showing the prophet Jonah inside the creature's open jaws. This unusual iconographic choice, referencing the biblical story of Jonah swallowed by a great fish, makes the pulpit one of the more memorable pieces of sacred woodwork in the region.

Where exactly is the church located?

The church sits at the very center of Mnichovice, on Masaryk Square, the town's main square and the focal point of local life. Its central position makes it a natural landmark for anyone exploring the town, with the building's mass standing out clearly above the surrounding architecture.
