Church of the Holy Trinity in Rakovník

Rakovník, Czechia

About this place

The Church of the Holy Trinity in Rakovník stands in the southern part of the town cemetery, in the area of the former Karlovy Vary (also called St. Giles) suburb, west of the historic town centre. Together with a wooden bell tower and the Chapel of St. Roch, it forms a protected complex listed as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

What is the history of the church?

The Holy Trinity cemetery was established in the St. Giles suburb in 1575. Ten years later, in 1585, an Italian master builder named Valentin began construction of the cemetery church, which was completed in 1588. In 1594 a small ridge turret was added to the roof. In 1600 another Italian builder active in Rakovník, Jan Cesar, extended the church on its western side and built a gallery into it. The interior decoration was carried out by Honza Řezenský, and in 1659 an organ was installed in the church. The building therefore grew in stages over more than a century, shaped by several successive generations of craftsmen.

What does the church's architecture look like?

The church is a single-nave building with a three-sided chancel closure, of Gothic character - even though it was actually built during the Renaissance period, around the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. The structure measures 22 metres in length and 9 metres in width, making it a small but well-proportioned sacred building. On the eastern side of the church stands a separate wooden bell tower. It is considered the most valuable wooden bell tower in the Czech Republic, and its significance is described as unique even on a European scale.

What else is worth seeing nearby?

The church complex also includes the Chapel of St. Roch, built in connection with a plague epidemic that struck the town in the past - which explains the close proximity of the church, bell tower and chapel within the cemetery grounds. The whole site lies within an active municipal cemetery in the western part of Rakovník, giving the place a quiet, contemplative character quite different from the monuments found in the town centre itself.
