Church of Saint Wenceslaus (Mníšek pod Brdy)

Mníšek pod Brdy, Czechia

About this place

The Church of Saint Wenceslaus is a Baroque church standing in the upper part of F. X. Svobody Square in Mníšek pod Brdy, surrounded by a small cemetery. It is one of the most recognizable landmarks of this small town in the Central Bohemian Region, its tall tower visible well above the surrounding rooftops.

How to get there?

Mníšek pod Brdy lies roughly 30 kilometers southwest of Prague, so the easiest way to reach it is by car or by regional bus departing from Prague's Zličín bus terminal. The church stands right in the town center on the main square, so from the bus stop it is only a few minutes on foot. A visit pairs naturally with a stop at nearby Mníšek Castle, less than a kilometer away.

What will you see?

The current church was built between 1743 and 1756 in Baroque style, with Kilian Ignaz Dienzenhofer the Younger, a member of the famous Prague architectural family, credited as the builder. The church was consecrated on September 28, 1756. Its distinctive pseudo-Romanesque tower, about 50 meters tall, was added only in 1868, and it is this tower that gives the church its silhouette recognizable from a distance today.

The history of the site, however, reaches much further back. The first written mention of a church under the same dedication dates to 1352, meaning people were already worshipping here in the Middle Ages, long before the present building existed. That earlier church and its rectory were destroyed in 1639, when Swedish troops plundered the town during the Thirty Years' War. After 1649, the building was restored by Jesuits from Prague, who took over pastoral care of the parish at the time. It was not until 1743, under Ignác Unwert, that construction began on an entirely new church at a new location closer to the center of the square, where it still stands today.

The church is surrounded by a small, historic cemetery, a layout typical of older parish churches in the region. The building is listed as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic, confirming its historical and architectural importance for the wider Podbrdsko region.

When should you visit?

The church is best seen during the day, when F. X. Svobody Square is lively and the building shows well in natural light. Spring and summer are good seasons for combining a visit with walks through the surrounding Podbrdsko countryside or a trip to Mníšek Castle and the nearby hills. It is worth checking with the local parish about opening hours for the interior, since access inside may be limited to Mass times and parish events.
