About this place
The Church of Saint Wenceslaus in Letohrad is a Baroque church standing right beside the town's chateau, its monumental façade facing the main square. Built between 1680 and 1685, it was commissioned by Hynek Jetřich Vitanovský of Vlčkovice, then owner of the Kyšperk estate (Letohrad's former name), and originally served as the chateau's private chapel.
Who built the church and when?
The architectural design is credited to the Italian master builder Antonio Demaggio, while the richly decorated stucco façade was the work of another Italian craftsman, Giovanni Maderna. The church was consecrated in 1681 by the Bishop of Hradec Králové, Jan František Kryštof of Talmberg. Its founder, Hynek Jetřich Vitanovský of Vlčkovice, is buried in the church's crypt alongside other former owners of the Kyšperk estate — a reminder that the building was conceived as much as a family monument as a place of worship.
What can you see inside?
The interior follows classic Baroque conventions. The main altar is flanked by statues of Saint Adalbert (Vojtěch) and Saint Prokop, while the centerpiece is a painting depicting the death of Saint Wenceslaus, created in 1785 by Christian Sambach, then director of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. Look out too for the organ dating from 1774, built by J. I. Strejsl of Králíky — a historically significant instrument still in place today. From the square, the façade impresses with three centrally positioned doors leading into the nave and dense Baroque stucco ornamentation typical of the period.
How do you get there?
The church sits in the center of Letohrad, immediately next to the chateau, making it a natural stop on a walking tour of the town. Letohrad lies in the Pardubice Region, close to the Polish border, and is well connected by road and rail via Ústí nad Orlicí and Choceň. The walk from the train station to the town center and the church usually takes no more than fifteen minutes.
When is the best time to visit?
The church and the surrounding chateau grounds are best explored in spring and summer, when the adjacent park and square look their most inviting and the town's other attractions, including the chateau itself, keep fuller opening hours. Since the building is a protected cultural monument used as an active parish church, it is worth checking current mass times and visiting hours in advance, as access to the interior outside of services can be limited.
