Church of Saint Wenceslaus and Saint Agnes of Bohemia

Hustopeče, Czechia

About this place

The Church of Saint Wenceslaus and Saint Agnes of Bohemia in Hustopeče is one of the most distinctive religious buildings in South Moravia. Located in the Břeclav district within the South Moravian Region, it is one of the few churches built in the Czech Republic only after 1989.

When and how was the church in Hustopeče built?

Construction took place between 1992 and 1994, based on a design by architect and artist Ludvík Kolka of Brno. Instead of a conventional rectangular nave, Kolka designed the building on a spiral floor plan that gradually rises as it winds upward. The result is a two-story structure with a shape unlike the historicist churches typical of the region, making it one of the first sacred buildings completed in the Czech Republic after the fall of communism.

What stood on this site before?

Before the current church was raised, Hustopeče had a late Gothic, two-nave church also dedicated to Saint Wenceslaus. The earliest written record of that older church dates back to 1324, pointing to a long history of parish life on this spot. The Gothic building was demolished in 1962, leaving the town without its own parish church for three decades until construction of the new one began at the turn of the 1990s.

How much did the new church cost, and who paid for it?

Total construction costs reached 27.5 million Czech crowns. Funding came from several sources: government subsidies, sponsorship contributions, and donations from believers in the Czech Republic and abroad. Donors from Germany and Austria contributed a notable share, reflecting how the postwar rebuilding of religious life in the region drew support beyond national borders.

When was the church consecrated?

The church was consecrated in 1994, shortly after building work was completed. The consecration falls within a period of active revival of parish communities in the Czech Republic following the political changes of 1989, with the Hustopeče church counted among the first new sacred buildings of that era in the country.

Where exactly is the church located?

The church stands at coordinates 48.94° N, 16.7376° E, within the town of Hustopeče, part of the Břeclav district in the South Moravian Region of the Czech Republic.
