Church of Saint Wenceslaus

St. Wenceslaus Church in Dolní Kalná is the most significant historic monument in this small village in the Trutnov district of north-eastern Bohemia, at the foot of the Krkonoše (Giant) Mountains. Built on raised ground right in the middle of the village next to the main road, the church is visible from a considerable distance in most directions around Dolní Kalná.

What is the history behind the church?

A Gothic church dedicated to St. Wenceslaus already stood on this spot in the 14th century - it is recorded as a parish church in 1352, while the village itself is first mentioned in written sources in 1369. That early building did not survive the Hussite Wars: it was destroyed in 1424.

The site was rebuilt in 1609, when a new church in the Renaissance style was raised at the expense of Václav of Valdštejn. A further, decisive alteration came in 1723, during a Baroque renovation that added the tower on the western facade - the appearance the church has largely kept ever since.

The church is a single-nave structure with a presbytery closed on three sides. A sacristy adjoins the presbytery, and an oratory was built onto the north side. The tower added in 1723 rises above the west front and remains the building's most recognisable feature when seen from the surrounding area.
