About this place

Church of Our Lady Help of Christians in Olomouc

The Church of Our Lady Help of Christians stands on Jiráskova Street in Hodolany, a district on the eastern side of Olomouc in the Czech Republic. It is a modest but distinctive building whose 31-metre tower is visible across much of the surrounding area, and its origin story is unusually personal for a parish church: it began as the private project of a single, blind resident of what was then an independent municipality.

Who started building the church in Hodolany?

Construction began in 1894 on the initiative of František Pospíšil, a blind citizen of Hodolany, who took on the project on his own land. He was unable to see it through to completion himself, largely because the municipality was unwilling to contribute the larger sum of money the work would have required. Rather than abandon the project, however, Pospíšil donated both the plot and the unfinished building to the municipality, allowing construction to resume and eventually reach completion under communal ownership.

When was the church finished?

The building was completed in 1907, and its first mass was celebrated on 4 May of that year. It was built in a style drawing on Renaissance forms, with a 31-metre tower that remains the most recognisable feature of the structure and a clear landmark within the Hodolany district today.

How did the church's status change over time?

For its first few decades the church functioned as a filial church rather than an independent parish seat. That changed in 1932, when Archbishop Leopold Prečan raised it to the status of a parish church. A further step toward local independence followed in 1940, when the Hodolany parish became fully autonomous, separated administratively from the neighbouring ecclesiastical structures of Olomouc.

What is notable about the church's interior?

One of the notable features inside is the organ, acquired in 1912, several years after the church itself was consecrated. Over the following decades the instrument underwent multiple repairs, and since 2016 it has been undergoing gradual reconstruction and expansion, allowing it to continue serving the parish community during services and musical events.

Where exactly is the church located?

The church stands in Hodolany, on the eastern side of Olomouc, on Jiráskova Street. Although Hodolany is today fully part of the city, it existed as a separate municipality at the time the church was built — which explains why the responsibility for finishing the construction fell to the local community itself rather than to Olomouc's municipal authorities.
