Church of Saint Mary Magdalene

Děčínský vikariát, Czechia

About this place

The Church of Saint Mary Magdalene stands in the center of Krásná Lípa, a small town in northern Bohemia, in the Děčín district near the German border. Its tower dominates the skyline and serves as a landmark for visitors exploring the Bohemian Switzerland region.

How do you get to the church in Krásná Lípa?

The church rises above Křinické náměstí square, right in the heart of town, so it's easy to find - the tower is visible from almost every street. Krásná Lípa lies close to Rumburk and Varnsdorf, and the most convenient approach is via the road connecting Děčín with the Šluknov Hook (Šluknovský výběžek).

What is the history behind it?

The first church on this site dates back to the 14th century, built sometime between 1332 and 1368 - making it the oldest church in Krásná Lípa. The building visitors see today, however, is a Baroque structure raised in 1754-1758 on the site of the original church. The tower followed in 1777. The monumental staircase leading to the entrance, decorated with sculptures and a large stone cross, was added between 1816 and 1818. The church has been protected as a cultural monument since 1966.

What can you see inside?

The interior is a single-nave hall with a three-sided presbytery. The main altar, created by Dominik Kindermann, dates from 1808. The Rococo pulpits are actually older, from 1765. A baptismal font topped with a marble figure of a sleeping child, carved by Ferdinand Pettrich in 1820, is one of the interior's most striking details. Organ enthusiasts should note the two-manual instrument built by the Rieger company in 1901, regarded as a representative example of late Romantic organ building.

What surrounds the church?

A cemetery with its own chapel wraps around the building, and a rectory stands nearby - a compact ensemble typical of small towns along the northern Bohemian border.

When is the best time to visit?

Krásná Lípa serves as a gateway to Bohemian Switzerland National Park, so pairing a visit to the church with a hike or bike ride through the surrounding sandstone rocks and gorges makes sense. Spring and autumn are quieter than summer, when most visitors head straight for the nearby Pravčická Gate.
