About this place
The Church of Saint Martin in Líbeznice is the most recognizable building in this village in the Praha-východ district of the Central Bohemian region, a short distance north of Prague. The Baroque church stands on a slight rise by today's Peace Square (náměstí Míru) and has shaped the village skyline for well over two centuries.
How old is the church in Líbeznice?
The dedication to Saint Martin at Líbeznice goes back much further than the current building. Surviving records confirm that a church under this patronage already stood here before 1380. That original, medieval church is thought to date from the 13th or 14th century and served the local community for several hundred years before it was eventually judged too small, or too worn, for the parish's needs.
The decision to build a replacement came from Count Nostic (Nostitz), owner of the local estate. The old church was demolished in 1788, and the new one was raised slightly higher up, to the south of the earlier site — on the ground that is now Peace Square. The foundation stone was blessed on 1 May 1788 by the Prague suffragan bishop Erasmus Dionysius Krieger. Construction itself was carried out under the supervision of master mason Matěj Kinzl from nearby Měšice, and the building was completed in 1795. It has stood in essentially unchanged form ever since.
What does the church look like architecturally?
The Church of Saint Martin follows the Baroque style typical of rural parish churches built in Bohemia during this period. It is a single-nave building on a rectangular plan, with a narrower presbytery closed on a square layout. This combination — a plain rectangular nave joined to a clearly separated square presbytery — was a standard arrangement for parish churches commissioned by local nobility in the second half of the 18th century.
Is the church still an active parish church?
Until the end of 2005, the Church of Saint Martin functioned as a parish church in its own right, serving as the seat of an independent Roman Catholic parish in Líbeznice. Since then it has been administratively attached to the Roman Catholic parish of Odolena Voda, operating as a filial (branch) church. Services and other religious events still take place here, even though the parent parish is based in the neighboring town.
Where exactly is the church located?
The church stands in the center of Líbeznice, on Peace Square, within the Praha-východ district of the Central Bohemian region. Its geographic coordinates are approximately 50.1919°N, 14.495°E, placing it right among the village's main buildings.
