Church of Saint John the Baptist

Horní Cerekev, Czechia

About this place

Church of Saint John the Baptist in Horní Cerekev is a modest but historically layered church standing on the grounds of the local cemetery in the Vysočina region of the Czech Republic. Its Baroque exterior conceals a considerably older Gothic core — traces of the earliest building phase are still visible in the south wall of the nave.

What is the history behind the church?

The site's origins reach back to the Middle Ages, when a Gothic cemetery chapel stood here, probably dedicated to Saint Linhard (Leonard). The foundations of that chapel survive today within the nave's south wall. Only in 1700 was the dedication changed to Saint John the Baptist, the patron under which the church has been known ever since.

The building's major transformation came in 1715–1716, when Archbishop František Künburg financed its reconstruction in the Baroque style. A stone plaque bearing his coat of arms above the main entrance still commemorates this work. The church underwent two further rounds of reconstruction, in 1765 and 1821, which accounts for the mix of architectural layers visible in the structure today.

What does the church's architecture look like?

The church has a single nave with a projecting vestibule on its western side. The presbytery closes in a pentagonal shape and is covered by cross vaulting — a common solution used when originally Gothic sacred buildings in the Czech countryside were reworked in the Baroque period.

What can visitors see inside?

Inside stands a main altar dating to the early 18th century, featuring an image of Saint John the Baptist from 1814. Statues of Saint Barbara and Saint Catherine flank the altar. The main nave also holds a stone crucifix, and the church's furnishings include a Baroque painting depicting Saint Luke.

Where exactly is the church located?

The church stands in Horní Cerekev, at coordinates 49.319167, 15.326081, within the grounds of the local cemetery — the origin of its historical role as a cemetery church.
