About this place
The Church of Saint John the Baptist is an early Baroque church standing in the center of Náměšť nad Oslavou, in the Vysočina region of the Czech Republic. Built as a single-nave structure with a transept, a polygonal chancel and a square tower, it ranks among the town's most significant religious landmarks and forms part of the municipal heritage zone.
How old is the church on this site?
A small Romanesque church already stood on this spot as far back as 1345. That earlier building did not survive — it burned down along with most of the town during a major fire in 1629. Ten years after the disaster, Count Jan Baptista of Werdenberg commissioned a considerably grander replacement. Construction was completed and the new church consecrated in 1641.
What architectural style does the church represent?
The building is classified as early Baroque and is monumental in scale for a town of this size. Its layout follows a single nave crossed by a transept and closed by a polygonal chancel. A square tower marks the exterior, while inside, side oratories allowed select worshippers to follow Mass without sitting in the main nave itself.
What can visitors see inside?
The main altar is made of artificial marble, a common decorative choice in Baroque church interiors. It is flanked by Baroque angel sculptures created by Josef Winterhalder the Elder. The altar painting depicts the baptism of Christ and is the work of Fridrich Stoll. The interior also features paintings of Saint Charles Borromeo and the Virgin Mary, in keeping with the typical iconographic programme of Baroque churches in the region.
Where do the saint statues on the facade come from?
In 1910, statues of saints were placed into niches on the church's front facade. They were produced in the Brno stonemasonry workshop of Adolf Loos the Elder — father of the world-renowned architect Adolf Loos, known for works such as the celebrated Looshaus in Vienna. This detail links an otherwise modest, provincial church to one of the major figures of 20th-century European modernist architecture, even though the church itself belongs to a much earlier era.
Is the church a protected monument?
Yes. The church, together with its surrounding grounds — including a Pietà statue and a cross — is listed as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. The whole complex also forms part of the urban heritage zone of Náměšť nad Oslavou, which covers the town's historic center.
